Jenny McKay MVB, PhD (Cantab), DiplECVP, FRCPath, FRSA, DipHE (TMM) MRCVS

European Head of Anatomic Pathology

Jenny qualified in veterinary medicine from University College Dublin in 1991 and spent two years working as a small animal veterinarian in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. She then moved to the University of Cambridge, UK where she completed her PhD entitled “The role of platelet-derived growth factor in remyelination”. Following this she spent three years in a Veterinary Pathology Residency at the University of Liverpool in the UK where she completed her European Boards and RCPath membership in veterinary pathology. Following a short period as a Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at Liverpool University, she moved to AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Alderley Park, UK, in 2001 where she held the position of Senior Pathologist at the Department of Pathology until 2013, specialising in toxicologic pathology and animal models for neurologic disease, infection and oncology. Besides Jenny’s role as a Senior Pathologist, she has also managed a biomedical group at AstraZeneca, organised conferences in Toxicological Pathology and Histopathology, provided veterinary teaching and mentoring experience in various universities and industry, and is a past examiner for the European College of Veterinary Pathologists. She has worked in several international committees including the North American Scientific and Regulatory Policy Committee, INHAND Central Nervous System Working Group, interacted with US and European drug regulators for drug submissions, and is a Past President of the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology. Jenny has published two book chapters on “The role of Nitric Oxide in the Nervous System” and “Boorman’s Pathology of the Rat-The Spinal Cord and Peripheral Nervous System” and has ~ 50 publications in peer reviewed journals. Special interests include implementation of digital pathology and artificial intelligence, oncology, neuropathology and feline and laboratory animal pathology.

Sophie Le Calvez DVM, Internship SA, DESV Anat Path, Dipl ACVP, MRCVS

Deputy Head of Anatomic Pathology

Sophie qualified from the University of Liege in Belgium in 2001. She then moved back to France to complete a one-year rotating Internship in Small Animals at the National Veterinary School of Lyon, followed by a 3-year Residency Programme in Anatomic Pathology at the National Veterinary School of Nantes. At the end of this period, she obtained the French qualification of specialist in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology (DESV Anat Path). During her internship, Sophie also worked in a busy small animal private practice covering night and weekend emergency duties. Following her specialisation, she moved to the UK to work for Finn Pathologists from 2006 to 2013. During that time, she successfully passed the American College of Veterinary Pathologist Board Examinations in 2009, and worked as a pathology consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) during a 4-month sabbatical in 2011. She then joined IDEXX as a Senior Anatomic Pathologist in October 2013. Her professional interests are general diagnostic pathology and comparative pathology in cancer research, with a special interest in lymphomas, immunohistochemistry, cytology and cytologic-histologic correlates.

Jake Ambridge BSc (Hons) BVetMed, DiplECVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

We are pleased to announce our first Anatomic Pathology Resident in the UK, based at University College Dublin (UCD), and sponsored by IDEXX. Jake qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2015. During his studies there, he received a Scholarship Bursary from the Welcome Trust to complete an intercalated Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Pathology. Jake then spent four and a half years in general practice in the UK, primarily treating small animals and wildlife. In 2020, he became the first IDEXX-UCD co-funded resident at University College Dublin, Ireland, completed his dissertation and European Boards in 2023 and is the most recent member of the IDEXX team. Away from his desk, Jake enjoys weight-training, keeping fit, and games of all forms.

Jaromir Benak DVM, DipACVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Jaromir graduated from the Veterinary University Brno, Czech Republic in 1996. He completed his veterinary anatomic pathology residency at UC Davis, California. Jaromir became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in September 2008. He then worked as an anatomic pathologist at IDEXX Laboratories for one year on a full-time position and 10 years as a contractor pathologist. Jaromir returned as a fulltime employee in February 2020. His special interests include oncology and dermatopathology.

Nerea Cuesta DVM, MSc, DiplECVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Nerea qualified as a vet from the University of Leon in Spain. She completed a 2-year internship in the Veterinary Hospital at the University of Leon, where she gained clinical and surgical experience with horses and small animals. She then moved to the University of Glasgow, UK, where she completed a residency program in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology and gained her MSc in colon cancer research at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research (BICR). She then moved back to Spain working for private diagnostic labs while offering diagnostic support for the Veterinary Hospital at the University of Leon, in charge of the cytology, biopsy, and necropsy services. Nerea passed the European College of Veterinary Pathologist (ECVP) Board Examination in February 2017 and joined IDEXX full time in 2019. Nerea has a special interest in ocular pathology.

Annalisa Forlani DVM, PhD, DiplECVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Dr Annalisa Forlani qualified as a vet from the University of Milan (Italy) in 2010, with an undergraduate degree thesis on the morphometric analysis of canine lymphoma cytological samples under the supervision of Prof. Marion Caniatt (DVM, PhD, Dipl. ECVP, Associated Professor). In 2011, she commenced a comined PhD-Residency program at the university of Milan. She graduated in 2014 with a PhD thesis entitled: "Combined diagnostic approaches for the diagnosis of canine splenic neoplasms: Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonography, ultrasound guided cytology, histology and immunohistochemistry in selected lesions". During her undergraduate and graduate studies, she has been involved in basic clinical research and in the routine diagnostic cytology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry and necropsy services of the Department of Public Health and Veterinary Science of the University of Milan, Italy. Annalisa joined IDEXX in April 2016 and has particular interests in oncology, lymphoproliferative disorders and dermatopathology.

Carolina (Carol) Naranjo Freixa, LV, Dipl. ACVP, Dipl. ECVP, PhD

Anatomic Pathologist

Carolina (Carol) Naranjo graduated from the Veterinary School at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), where she also obtained a PhD in Veterinary Medicine. She completed a 1-year fellowship on ocular pathology at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) under the supervision of Dr. Richard Dubielzig. Afterwards she transitioned into a 3-year residency program in anatomic pathology at the University of Wisconsin. She is a diplomate of both the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Pathology. She was Assistant Professor at the UAB and Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and managed a pathology service with a main interest in ocular pathology as a freelance consultant. She joined IDEXX Laboratories in Barcelona in July 2015, with a special interest in ocular and periocular samples. She is co-author of several national and international papers and frequently lectures for clinicians in both local Spanish and international venues, including the William Magrane Basic Science Course in Veterinary and Comparative Ophthalmology.

Isobel Gibson DVM, DVSc, Diplomate ACVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Dr Isobel Gibson graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in Canada in 1996. After graduation, she spent a short period doing mixed animal practice in Ontario before heading to the UK to do small animal locum work in Stourbridge and Grimsby. In 1998, she returned to OVC to take up a residency and study for her DVSc in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. Isobel obtained her DVSc in 2002 and relocated to New Zealand to work for a private veterinary diagnostic laboratory called Alpha Scientific. In 2004, Isobel then joined a new start up veterinary diagnostic company called New Zealand Veterinary Pathology (NZVP). Work at NZVP involved a mixture of production and small animals, as well as involvement in national disease surveillance. In 2015, NZVP was acquired by IDEXX laboratories. Isobel continued to work for NZVP/IDEXX until recently, when she began to work for IDEXX UK. Isobel’s special interests are in dermatopathology, infectious disease, and production animal(ruminant)pathology.

Eva Kammergruber, Dr.med.vet., Diplomate ECVP

Anatomic Pathologist

Eva qualified as a vet from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in 2014, followed by three-year-post-graduate doctoral studies, focusing on anatomic ocular adnexal structures of bird eyes and immunohistochemical characteristics of the equine corneal epithelium. Eva moved to the Netherlands in 2018 to complete a residency program in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Utrecht. This included necropsies of zoo and wildlife, as well as companion and large animals. During her residency, Eva also had the chance to develop further her interest and expertise in ocular pathology. She joined the IDEXX team in April 2023 and her main pathology interests are ocular pathology and birds.

Camille Longué BSc BVM&S MVetMed, Dipl ACVP, MRCVS Anatomic Pathologist

Anatomic Pathologist

Camille qualified as a vet from the University of Edinburgh in 2014 following completion of a BSc in Physiology in Canada. She then spent several years in first-opinion companion animal practice in London before undertaking a residency in Anatomic Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). Camille passed the American College of Veterinary Pathologist (ACVP) Board Examination in August 2021. She joined the IDEXX team in October 2020 and has a special interest in ocular pathology and exotics/zoo/wildlife species.

Chris Palgrave BSc(Hons), BVM&S, PhD, FHEA, FRCPath, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Chris Palgrave graduated as a vet from the University of Edinburgh, where he also completed an intercalated BSc (Hons) and PhD in comparative pathology and immunogenetics. He worked for a year in mixed (predominantly dairy) practice in rural Pennsylvania, USA, before attending the Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Residency Program at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. USA. Chris returned to the UK as a Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Edinburgh before moving to the University of Bristol as a Senior Lecturer. After two years gaining experience in a commercial diagnostic laboratory (Bridge Pathology), Chris joined the new veterinary school at the University of Surrey where he helped to establish the veterinary pathology curriculum and Surrey Veterinary Pathology Centre. Chris is an experienced teacher at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level; he also enjoys providing pathology expertise and support to clinicians wishing to publish their cases studies, case series and clinical research. Chris has broad diagnostic experience across farm, equine and small animals and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Higher Education Academy. In his spare time, Chris is a keen beekeeper and member of the British Bee Veterinary Association. He is involved in a number of projects on honeybee/pollinator husbandry, health and disease. Chris joined the team at IDEXX in 2018 and became Head of Pathology, South Africa in 2023.

Stefano Di Palma DVM, PhD, Dipl ECVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Stefano qualified in veterinary medicine from the University of Padova (Italy) in 2004. After spending two years in a small animal practice in Italy, he started a residency program in veterinary pathology at the University of Bern (Switzerland). He then worked for Idexx as part of the Italian team for 5 years, passing the European College of Veterinary Pathologist (ECVP) board exam in 2011. Following this, he moved to the UK to join the pathology department at the Animal Health Trust for 3 years as Clinician in Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist and for the following 6 months as Acting Head of Anatomic Pathology. In 2019 he moved back to Italy and worked as Pathologist in the Preclinical Development team in Aptuit (Verona), an Evotec Company, before going back to Idexx in 2021 joining the UK team. In 2020 he completed his PhD in Veterinary Science at the University of Bologna entitled “Canine oral melanoma: an investigation into the molecular bases of malignancy and refractoriness”. Since 2023 he has been managing the French Anatomic pathology team. Special interests include oncology, dermatopathology and neuropathology.

Tamara Veiga Parga DVM, PhD, DACVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Dr. Tamara Veiga Parga qualified as a vet from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, in 2008 and thereafter moved to Knoxville,Tennessee, USA to start a PhD (Viral Immunology) researching on the role of T lymphocytes in a mouse model of human herpetic keratitis. After graduating in 2013, she joined the University of Tennessee Anatomic Pathology Residency program. During this time, she worked in the necropsy and biopsy diagnostic services that included: small, large, zoo, exotic, and wildlife animals. Tamara finished her residency in June 2016, passed the American College of Veterinary Pathologist (ACVP) Board Examination in September 2016 and joined IDEXX in November 2016. She has been managing the Anatomic Pathology teams in Spain and France since 2020. Her particular interests include infectious diseases, immunopathology and ocular pathology.

Stephanie Plog DVM PhD DiplECVP MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Stephanie graduated as a vet from the University of Berlin (FU), Germany in 2007. She started a combined residency/PhD programme in veterinary anatomic pathology and completed a PhD entitled “Characterization of porcine CLCA members with potential significance for cystic fibrosis” in 2012. She stayed at the university as postdoc, where she was involved in small and large animal pathology diagnostics, lecturing and research. She passed the European College of Veterinary Pathologist (ECVP) board exam in February 2014 and moved to the UK soon after that to start working for IDEXX, where she also held the position of Team Leader. After working for another commercial lab for a few years, she returned to IDEXX in August 2021. Stephanie has published two book chapters on “Urogenital tract tumors” and “Tumors of the exocrine pancreas”; other main professional interests include dermatopathology and infectious diseases. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys climbing and hiking.

Elena Riccardi DVM, PhD, Dipl ECVP MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Elena Riccardi graduated from the University of Milan, Italy, in 2002 and she started working at the Department of Pathology, University of Milan, firstly as a student fellow for the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, then as a PhD student and then as a pathology resident in 2004. Her research topic was focused on tumours of the genital system of the dog, mainly testicular and prostatic cancer. During that time, she was also involved in the post-mortem examination and histopathology diagnostic services of small and exotic animal species , including immunohistochemistry. In 2007 she moved to CRO Accelera S.r.l. (Nerviano, Italy) as a toxicological pathologist, becoming Head of the Pathology Department. Elena has also worked as a pathology consultant for BiEsseA, a diagnostic histopathology laboratory in Milan. She passed the European College of Veterinary Pathologist (ECVP) board exam in 2010. Elena has a special interest in oral pathology and has published and presented in this field. In 2019 she also had a sabbatical at UC Davis working with Professor Brian Murphy on gingival pathology.

Aude Roulois DVM, PhD(Cantab), FRCPath, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Aude qualified from the University of Nantes, France, in 2001. She then moved to the UK to become a lecturer in veterinary pathology at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, undertaking diagnostic activities, teaching of clinical veterinary students and supervising preclinical students from several Colleges in pathology and neurology. In 2004, she obtained her Diploma of the Royal College of Pathologists and was awarded a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship for her PhD entitled “Regulation of white matter oligodendrocyte progenitor cell differentiation during remyelination”, which she completed in 2008 together with her Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists. During this time, she also worked as a diagnostic pathologist for David Bostock histopathology, UK. She then joined GlaxoSmithKline, Ware, UK, as a Toxicologic Pathologist and later as a Director of Pathology. There, she contributed as project, discovery and peer reviewing pathologist providing safety assessment expertise and scientific and ethical review of preclinical studies in various therapeutic fields including neuroscience, immunology and medical devices in Europe, the US and Asia. In parallel, she has lectured at various Universities and international pathology conferences, has contributed to the Society of Toxicologic Pathology committee on CNS sampling in toxicological studies, the Toxicologic Pathology editorial board and is a current member of the French Society of Toxicologic Pathology board. She has organised scientific conferences for the British Society of Toxicological Pathology, the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology and the Wellcome Trust. Aude has published two book chapters on the “Histology of the mouse nervous system” and “Boorman’s pathology of the rat- the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system”. She joined Idexx in November 2019 and has special interests in neuropathology, immunohistochemistry, laboratory animal pathology, teaching and training.

Alan Stevens BVetMed, MSc, FRCPath, DACVP, MRCVS

Anatomic Pathologist

Alan graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 1995. He then spent a number of years in mixed and exotic animal veterinary practice. During this period, he spent a year in Scotland where he gained his MSc in Aquatic Veterinary Studies at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling. In 2001 he moved to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh as a resident in veterinary pathology and afterwards gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists. He then worked in commercial veterinary diagnostics as an anatomic pathologist at IDEXX Laboratories for eight years and during this time held the position of Deputy Head of Anatomic Pathology. In 2013, he was part of the initial development of the new School of Veterinary Medicine & Science at the University of Surrey, Guildford. Setting up and developing diagnostic histopathology and post-mortem services was a major part of this work, and he subsequently took the lead in small and exotic animal pathology. In 2017, Alan returned to full time diagnostic histopathology work with IDEXX Laboratories as a senior anatomic pathologist. His special interest is fish pathology.

Jennifer Stewart BSc, DVM, MRCVS

Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist

Jennifer graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2005. Having developed interest in pathology as an undergraduate, which was cemented during her time as a post-mortem technician during veterinary school, she followed this with a residency in anatomic pathology at Cornell University, attaining her Diplomate of American College of Veterinary Pathology (DACVP) in anatomic pathology in 2010. After leaving Cornell she moved to the UK and started work at the Animal Health Trust (AHT) in Suffolk. During her time at the AHT her work was primarily focused on canine, feline and notably equine health. Having developed an interest in clinical pathology while at veterinary school she pursued additional training while working, and gained her DACVP in clinical pathology in 2013. Thereafter she worked in both the clinical and anatomic pathology departments at the AHT, with time spent as Lab Manager and Head of Clinical Pathology. After leaving the AHT she spent time working as an independent contractor in both anatomic and clinical pathology for a number of regional labs. She joined Idexx full time in August 2022, where she continues to be an active participant in both fields. When not working she is passionate about reading, baking, and travelling.

David Maguire MVB Bsc MVetMed DipACVP FRCPath MRCVS

Director EU and South Africa Clinical & Anatomical Pathology

David graduated from University College Dublin in 2004. During his undergraduate studies one year was spent at the Royal Veterinary College and Cancer Research UK undertaking a BSc in Veterinary Pathology sponsored by the Wellcome Trust. Following graduation David spent 5 years working in mixed and small animal practice in Essex, Staffordshire and Australia. David returned from Australia in 2009 to complete a residency in veterinary clinical pathology at the Royal Veterinary College. He obtained a Masters in Veterinary Medicine alongside his residency, working on renal biomarkers in the pharmaceutical industry. American Board Certification in veterinary clinical pathology was achieved in 2012 followed by FRCPath Certification in 2014. Joining IDEXX in 2012, David was made clinical pathology team leader for the Wetherby site the following year. David’s main interests in the field of veterinary clinical pathology include cytology and its correlation with histopathology, haematology and teaching. Outside of work David enjoys mountain biking and he can often be found off the north Welsh coast windsurfing.

Alison Farr BVet Med, Dip ACVP, FRCPath, MRCVS

European Head of Veterinary Clinical Pathology

Alison graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2000 and spent five years in small animal practice where she developed her interests in pathology, internal medicine and exotic animal medicine before joining IDEXX as a trainee in clinical pathology in 2005. Alison left in 2008 to have a family and returned to small animal practice for several years, before rejoining the company in June 2012 to continue her training, and obtained the FRCPath certification in 2015. She has a special interest in exotic animal medicine. She has also co-written three veterinary nursing textbooks. In 2016 Alison obtained the diploma from the American College of Pathologists.

Larry Roberts BVM&S, PhD, MRCVS

Head of Clinical Microbiology

Larry graduated from Edinburgh University in 1973 as Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, with distinction. After a short spell in mixed general practice in Fife, he was awarded a University Scholarship and returned to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh to study Diagnostic Veterinary Pathology for 12 months. Following this, three years were spent studying for a PhD in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Edinburgh University, graduating in 1978. This period involved training in both Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Microbiology. In late 1977, Larry joined the then Scottish Veterinary Investigation Service in Aberdeen, which later became SAC Veterinary Services. During this time, he gained a wide experience in veterinary laboratory diagnostic work in both farm and companion animals. Field investigational and research work was also undertaken resulting in a wide range of publications covering several disciplines. Papers were presented regularly at International meetings. Larry joined IDEXX in January 1994 as head of the Microbiology Section, which offers comprehensive microbiology support in the investigation of individual clinical cases and herd/flock/stable problems. He also works as a Clinical Pathologist reporting on equine, farm and companion animal cases.

Stephen Jordan BVM&S FRCPath MRCVS

Head of Clinical Pathology UK

Stephen graduated in 2010 with Distinction from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh. After three years in general practice around Yorkshire he joined a commercial laboratory in the UK as a trainee clinical pathologist. After joining Idexx in 2018 he obtained his FRCPath certification in 2019. Outside of work he can generally be found riding bicycles.

Marta Costa DVM MSc FRCPath DipECVCP MRCV

UK Deputy Head of Veterinary Clinical Microbiology

Marta graduated from the Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa (FMV-UTL) in 2001. After five years combining first opinion in private small animal practice with work as a clinical pathologist at FMV-UTL, she completed a Masters in Medical Microbiology in 2007 and became a lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology and Infectious Diseases at Universidade Lusofona, in Lisbon.
In 2009 she moved to the UK to undertake a clinical pathology residency at the University of Bristol, where she remained up to 2020, first as a clinical pathologist in the Diagnostic Laboratories, and later as a lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. During that time she obtained her FRCpath and ECVCP diploma. She has remained actively linked to microbiology and is a member of the Study Group for Veterinary Microbiology of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESGVM/ESCMID). Marta's special interests lie in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, antimicrobial sensitivity testing, biomarker use and development, and all that pertains to a microscope, where she finds beauty every day. She tries to conciliate her love for teaching, research and clinical practice on a daily basis.

Anna Brunetti BSc BVMS Dip ACVP, MRCVS

Clinical Pathologist

Anna qualified in 2008 with Commendation from the University of Glasgow. Given her background in feline retroviral research from UC Davis prior to vet school, she joined the University of Glasgow Companion Animal Diagnostic laboratory as a Virology Registrar. Afterwards, she worked in small animal practice, completed a certificate in Veterinary Forensic Sciences, and also undertook a Pfizer Feline Fellowship at University of Bristol. In 2016, she returned to the University of Glasgow as their Veterinary Diagnostic Microbiologist and oversaw the diagnostic virology, bacteriology and parasitology departments. The following year she joined the team at IDEXX Laboratories and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Clinical Pathology) in 2021. She is passionate about of infectious disease, feline medicine, and all aspects of clinical pathology.

Carola Campora MVB, Dip ECVCP, FRCPath MRCVS

Carola qualified in Veterinary Medicine at the Veterinary School of the University of Milan in 2003. In 2004 she attended a 1-year part time course in Small Animal Clinical Pathology in the University of Milan. After graduation, she worked as a veterinarian in a first opinion practice in Milan for a few years before joining IDEXX in October 2006 to start her residency in veterinary clinical pathology, successfully obtaining the diploma of European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2014 and the FRCPath certification in 2015. Carola’s interests include cytology and quality assurance.

Marta graduated from Milan University, Italy in 2002 and spent six years in small animal practice where she developed her interests in internal medicine and clinical pathology. In 2009 she started a residency in veterinary clinical pathology in a commercial lab in the UK and obtained her FRCPath certification in 2013 and diploma of European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2014. She joined IDEXX Laboratories as a clinical pathologist in September 2014.

Emma Dewhurst MA VetMB, FRCPath, DipECVCP, MRCVS

Emma qualified in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 1994. After which she spent 2 years in the Basic Science Department at the Royal Veterinary College before returning to her home town of Bristol where she then worked in small animal practice for 3 years. In 2003 Emma completed a residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at the University of Bristol Veterinary School under the tutelage of Dr Kostas Papsouliotis. In 2003 Emma was awarded the Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Pathology from the Royal College of Pathologists. In 2008 through dissertation and viva Emma became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. In 2008 Emma was also awarded the European Diploma in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. Emma has worked in the commercial veterinary diagnostic industry since 2003. She is particularly interested in the diagnostic utility of laboratory tests. Outside of work, much of Emma’s free time is taken up with her two daughters, but when time allows Emma enjoys walking her dog and swimming. Emma and her family currently live 7 minutes from the beach in Teignmouth, South Devon.

Margarida Domingos DVM, Dip ECVCP, MRCVS

Clinical Pathologist

Margarida qualified from Lisbon Technical University (Portugal), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in 1999. She worked as a part-time small animal clinician for some years, was a trainee at a Wild Animal Recovering Centre in Lisbon for a year, mostly dealing with injured birds, and spent 2.5 years in Lisbon’s National Research Veterinary Laboratory (LNIV), working mainly with mycobacteria. In 2007, Margarida started a 4 year residency program that included a period at University College Dublin and then at a private lab (Vebio) in France. In 2013, she became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. She worked in other private diagnostic labs in the UK since 2013 before joining IDEXX Laboratories in November 2017. Main interests include quality management and infectious diseases.

Alex Draper BVetMed MS MSc DACVIM PhD AFHEA MRCV

Clinical Pathologist

Alex graduated as a vet from the Royal Veterinary College in 2007 and, following an equine internship there, she spent time as an equine vet before embarking on a large animal internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota. She obtained her Masters in Pelvic Limb Movement Disorders in Horses, and successfully completed ACVIM boards in large animal medicine in 2013. She completed a masters in neuroscience and neurodegeneration at King’s College London and a PhD Investigating the aetiopathogenesis and genetic risk factors associated with Equine Recurrent Laryngeal Neuropathy at the RVC in 2019. She completed her Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Cambridge in 2021 joining IDEXX Laboratories thereafter.

Morag Dunlop BVMS, PhD, MRCVS, FRCPath

Clinical Pathologist

Morag Dunlop graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 1983 and returned to Glasgow to study for her PhD in equine reproduction, after 2 years in mixed practice. This was followed by 3 years working in the Clinical Research Centre in North London where she was involved working on research projects in mouse genetics as well as the care of the laboratory animals. Morag then returned to practice concentrating on small animal work before leaving to work as a veterinary clinical pathologist in UK veterinary laboratories since 2005. She gained her Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2014. Morag is working from the IDEXX pathology office in Horsham.

Heather Hodgson BSc BVetMed Dip ACVP, MRCVS

Clinical Pathologist

Heather graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine and an intercalated BSc in Veterinary Pathology. Post-graduation she completed several short pathology and research-based work placements at Axiom Veterinary Laboratories, the Royal Veterinary College and the Animal Health Trust before spending two and a half years in general practice as a small animal vet in Cambridgeshire. She then completed a small animal rotating internship at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire with a particular interest in internal medicine. Due to an enduring enthusiasm for pathology and a strong interest in pursuing specialist training in clinical pathology she then joined NationWide Laboratories in Lancashire and spent a year as a trainee clinical pathologist. In July 2017 Heather joined IDEXX Laboratories as a resident in clinical pathology and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2021.

Emma Holmes BVetMed MVetMed DipACVP MRCVS

Emma graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2009 and spent four years working in mixed and small animal practice in North Wales and Staffordshire where she developed her interests in pathology before returning to the RVC in 2013 to complete a clinical pathology residency. Emma obtained a Masters in veterinary medicine alongside her residency, with American Board Certification in veterinary clinical pathology achieved shortly after joining IDEXX in 2016. Emma’s main interests in the field of veterinary clinical pathology include haematology, bone marrow examination and exotic animal pathology. Emma combines her part-role at IDEXX with her role as lecturer in Clinical Pathology at the Royal Veterinary College. Outside of work Emma enjoys running, swimming and the odd bit of cycling, sometimes all at the same time.

Tim Jagger BVM&S, MSc, FRCPath, MRCVS

Clinical Pathologist

Tim graduated from Edinburgh University in 1985. Between 1985 and 1992 he gained practical experience in mixed practice in the UK and in Southern Africa, graduating with an MSc in Tropical Veterinary Science from Edinburgh University in 1993. Tim has worked as a veterinary clinical pathologist in UK veterinary laboratories since 1994. Tim joined IDEXX Laboratories in November 2003 and reports on haematology, clinical chemistry, endocrinology, cytology and microbiology cases, gaining his Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2009. He gained certification as a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Green Belt in 2015. LSS is a methodology for continuous improvement within IDEXX Laboratories. Outside of work Tim enjoys creative writing and allotment gardening and is an active member of the MX5 owners club.

Alice Pastorello DVM MVetSci Diplomate ACVP (Clin Path) MRCVS

Alice graduated from the University of Padova, Italy, in 2003 and spent a few years in small animal practice before moving to Scotland in 2007 to enroll in a Master of Veterinary Science by Research at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, with a research on canine lymphomas. In 2008, Alice relocated to England to start a residency in veterinary clinical pathology as a joint program between the University of Cambridge and a commercial diagnostic lab in the southwest. She obtained her American Board Certification in veterinary clinical pathology (ACVP) in 2014. Alice has been working in the veterinary diagnostic industry since 2011 and joined IDEXX Laboratories in 2020.

Chiara Piccinelli DVM DipECVCP FRCPath FHEA MRCVS

Chiara graduated from the Veterinary School at the University of Milan, Italy in 2009. After graduation she worked in first opinion small animal practice and as a clinical pathologist in Italy for a few years. In February 2014 Chiara moved to Scotland to undertake a residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at Easter Bush Pathology, R(D)SVS, University of Edinburgh. Chiara obtained her Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) certification in 2018, followed by the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (DipECVCP) in 2019. After finishing the training program, Chiara worked as a Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at the University of Edinburgh from February 2017 until August 2021, when she joined the IDEXX team. Her interests include lymphoproliferative disorders and haematopathology. When not at work, you can often find Chiara hiking or running up the beautiful Scottish hills and Munros.

Jennifer graduated from the University of Edinburgh with Distinction in 2013. Following graduation, she worked in small animal practice in northern California for three years where she developed interests in internal medicine, oncology, cytology, and ultrasound. In 2016 she returned to the U.K. and worked in small animal emergency practice in Hampshire for one year. Jennifer joined IDEXX in 2017 as a clinical pathology resident and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 2021.

Julia graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2009 from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana, IL, USA). She received her clinical pathology residency training and master’s degree at Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO, USA). She became board certified through the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in Clinical Pathology in 2013. She joined IDEXX in 2015 and has supported the team in the USA, Europe and UK. She is currently based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA.

Mariana Serra DVM, Dip ECVCP, FRCPath, MRCVS

Mariana graduated from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Portugal in 2006 where she completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine. At the end of 2007 she started a residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology at the University College Dublin in Ireland. She joined IDEXX Laboratories in the UK at the beginning of 2009, obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2013 and gained her Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2014. Mariana has a special interest in quality management and method validation and is part of the LAMA team (Laboratory Analytical and Medical Advisors). She enjoys working with different departments and laboratories within IDEXX and help improve the service and tests they provide.

Melanie Spoor DVM MS Diplomate ACVP (Clin Path.) MRCVS

Melanie obtained her DVM from Colorado State University in 2008 after which she completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at Washington State University. From there, Melanie began her Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Missouri, Columbia where she also obtained a MS degree focusing on the epigenetics of canine lymphoproliferative disorders. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathology in 2012 and worked in diagnostics before joining IDEXX in 2015. Special interests include: cytology, hematology, lymphoproliferative disorders, oncology, acid base and electrolyte abnormalities.

Elizabeth Steeves BSc, DVM, MVSc, Dip ACVP, MRCVS

Clinical Pathologist

Elizabeth graduated as Doctor veterinary medicine degree in 1994 at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada. She practiced as a general practitioner in Calgary following graduation for several years and then returned for the pathology residency program at WCVM between 1997 and 2000. In 2002 Elizabeth achieved American Board Certification in veterinary clinical pathology becoming a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. She arrived in the UK in 2000 and worked as a lecturer in clinical pathology at the Royal Veterinary College in London until 2007 shifting to the diagnostic industry. In 2010 Elizabeth joined IDEXX. She has many diverse interests including cytology, histopathology, and hematopathology and has great interest in wildlife. Out of work she is the owner of three gorgeous dogs, she plays the piano and the viola and enjoys running.

Chiara completed her veterinary degree in 2013 the University of Bologna (Italy) having taken her third year at the Madrid Complutense University on an Erasmus grant. She then moved to Ireland and then England to work in first opinion small animal practice. She was introduced to the field of clinical pathology during her postgraduate studies at Cambridge University where she was awarded an MPhil for her work on the microenvironment of histiocytic sarcoma in Flatcoated Retrievers. She then began her residency program at a commercial laboratory and became board-certified in 2022. Chiara resides in Italy with her husband and children. When not at work she enjoys skiing, playing tennis and travelling.

Theodora Tsouloufi DVM, PhD, AFHEA, MRCVS

Clinical Pathology Resident

Theodora graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2011, where she completed an internship followed by a PhD in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. She then joined the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2017 as a researcher in a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project. In summer 2021, Theodora joined IDEXX to receive specialised training in Veterinary Clinical Pathology. She is interested in all aspects of clinical pathology, with special interests in cytopathology, clinical pathology of exotic animals and quality management. She also has a strong interest in clinical research and is an author of many publications and scientific abstracts, while she serves as a reviewer in several veterinary journals. Theodora is committed to the principles of evidence based veterinary medicine and currently serves in the Editorial Board of the open access journal Veterinary Evidence, which is published by RCVS Knowledge. When not at the microscope, Theodora enjoys reading, travelling, and stargazing with her telescope.

Lou Dawson qualified as a vet from the University of Bristol in 2011. Following some time in small animal practice and industry, she returned to Bristol in 2012 to undertake a residency in Anatomic Pathology. She finished her residency in November 2015 and joined IDEXX in the same month. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in January 2016. She became a Team Leader in April 2019. Lou enjoys all areas of general diagnostic pathology but has specific professional interests in hepatic pathology, dermatopathology and equine pathology, as well as quality assurance. She is currently the honorary secretary of the British Society of Veterinary Pathology.
